yk-pao-24h-runOn the  June 7th, YK Pao School Secondary Division’s PE Teacher Christopher Gibbs began a 24-hour run around the school’s running track to raise money for a school in Darka, a rural and very poor area of Nepal. Chris has loved running from an early age, and has taken part in numerous extreme challenges such as the 250km, 7-day race across the Gobi desert he competed last July. Travelling to Nepal this winter, he decided to use his passion for extreme endurance events to help others and raise money for this Nepalese village, which he has visited a number of times before.

The whole school community came out in force to support Chris’ challenge. Students, teachers and the founder, Philip Sohmen, came to run alongside Chris in the afternoon.

Around 6 o’clock, after ten hours of running, Chris’ knee was injured and he was unable to continue. Teachers, staff, students and their families and friends decided to keep the run going by running round the track in shifts, helping Chris reach the goal of a 24-hour run. Hunter, one of the Year 7 parents, kept running through the night from 8pm until 8am.

At 8:15 the next day, 24 hours after Chris had begun running, all of Chris’ supporters, and Chris, in a wheelchair, completed the final lap and made it through to the finish.

As Chris said, “This isn’t one person’s 24 hours, but it’s YK Pao School’s 24 hours!”
