Saturday November 26th was English Speech Day at YK Pao School, a day designed to give students the chance practice the important life skill of speaking in public.

Students spoke on a range of topics, including Chinese life and culture, sport, and science. Performances were judged on content and delivery, emphasizing the importance of posture, humor, and engaging the audience. The final was judged by Christopher Stuart-Clark, a well-known writer and editor of children’s books who previously taught at Eton and now visits Shanghai regularly as an advisor to YK Pao School. Christopher was impressed by the confidence of the speakers, and the high quality of the speeches.

One of the best things about the competition according to Helena Mallon, one of the event’s organizers, was that the students who excelled were often those who were quiet and shy in class. This event gave everyone an opportunity to stand up and speak, and to discover that, although sometimes daunting, speaking in public is something that gets easier and more enjoyable with practice.
