yk-pao-5th1On October 13, over 2,500 students, parents, faculty, and guests gathered together for a joyous event to celebrate YK Pao School’s 5th Anniversary. YK Pao School was founded in 2007 in memory of shipping tycoon, statesman and educational philanthropist Sir YK Pao.  Since its establishment, YK Pao School has achieved recognition for its unique curriculum combining Chinese education with international practice, a bilingual environment and a focus on whole person education.

The 5th Anniversary celebration was held on YK Pao School’s recently opened secondary school campus in Thames Town in Shanghai Songjiang.  Special guest Professor Yang Chen Ning, the first Chinese Nobel Prize winner, delivered an inspiring speech during the opening ceremony explaining how he was enticed into the study of physics after finding a book in English in his school library. Professor Yang advised the young students present that “these times offer many opportunities to young people, so you must seize these opportunities.”

Guests also celebrated the inauguration of the Yang Chen Ning Learning Centre on the campus, the first secondary school building in China to be named in Professor Yang’s honor. National People’s Congress Standing Member and former Vice-Minister of Education, Madam Wu Qi Di addressed the 300 guests and 1500 parents assembled and noted that YK Pao School is playing a pioneering role in the development and reform of education in China.

After a rousing performance of different student musical works ranging from a traditional fan dance to the Beatles to a ground shaking “Waka Waka” dance performed by all 750 students, guests celebrated the dedication of new spaces donated and constructed at the school this year. The four daughters of Sir YK Pao, Anna, Bessie, Cissy, and Doreen Pao jointly donated the Huang Sue Ing Memorial Library in memory of their mother along with an outstanding new swimming pool donated by Doreen Pao and Art Room donated by Cissy Pao, alongside two pieces of monumental art, a sculpture named ‘Time Passing’ by French artist Natalie Decoster and the four-storey high ‘Rocket’ by Hong Kong artist Kum Chikeung, installed inside the Yang Chen Ning Learning Centre.

During the “School in Session,” students from Year 1 to Year 8 participated in activities throughout the school, showcasing the school’s philosophy of whole person education with sports, dance, and music as well as science and humanities classes.

“Education is how we can inspire and change the future. That is why we founded this school – to build a school for tomorrow’s China,” concluded Mrs. Anna Pao Sohmen, the eldest daughter of Sir YK Pao and Founder of YK Pao School.
