pao-school-secondary-school-boardinge589afe69cacYK Pao School recently announced the opening of its new Secondary School in autumn 2011. The school offers boarding education and is located in Thamestown in Songjiang district on the outskirts of Shanghai. It has already started enrolling students worldwide, with the first batch of year 7 and year 8 students arriving in September.

The leadership of the school brings experience from the top boarding schools from around the world. One of the founders of YK Pao School, Mr. Philip Sohmen, was a scholar and Head Boy at the world famous Eton College in the UK. The Principal of YK Pao Secondary School, Tony Jaccaci, was previously a teacher and administrator at St. George’s School, a leading boarding school in the US, for 15 years. The list of advisers of the school includes leading educators such as Sir Eric Anderson, former Provost of Eton College, and Robert Mattoon, former Head of Hotchkiss School, USA.

With a strong understanding of boarding school education and support from education experts, the new school will follow the model of UK and US independent boarding schools, aiming to provide international standard boarding education to students and to help students get into leading universities in the UK and US.

The Secondary School is in its final stages of construction. Designed by a team of British architects in line with international campus and dormitory standards, the English style campus is at one corner of Thames Town and covers an area of over 60,000m2. Apart from teaching areas, it will include a large library, 6 science laboratories, 4 art studios, auditorium, musical hall, music practice rooms, an indoor gym and a swimming pool.

Students are divided by gender; the same gender but different age and different year students all living together in the same house. Each house therefore resembles a big family, with teachers acting as parents, and students like brothers and sisters.

The school will carry on its bilingual education in the Secondary School and plans to teach IB curriculum for year 10- 12 students.
