ycis-sh_school-news_philippines-fundraisers-1Students at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS Shanghai) initiated a number of activities this November to raise funds to support global relief efforts to help people in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

Secondary students at both YCIS Shanghai Century Park and Gubei campuses created fundraising ‘Dress-up Days’, with students donating money to participate, with the theme at the school’s Gubei Campus of “Colours of the Philippines flag: red, yellow, blue, and white.” Also at YCIS Shanghai Century Park Campus, the students enjoyed a ‘Dress-up Day’ as a means of encouraging donations, but they took on a different theme: dressing up as historical figures that correlated to the lessons taking place in their humanities classes. The Student Council worked closely with the Humanities Department to combine the day with a bake sale, and the entire school participated in a week-long clothing drive, collecting ten large boxes of clothing for donation to the ABS-CBN Foundation. In addition, Primary students at the school’s Hongqiao Campus raised awareness of the situation during a school-wide assembly, and they shared a prayer for the people of the Philippines. A combined total of nearly RMB 30,000 was raised by students’ efforts, with the money going to support the relief efforts of the Philippines Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity.
