ycis-sh-violin-concertThe annual Spring Violin Concert starring Yew Chung International School of Shanghai’s Year 2 and Year 3 students is a wonderful reminder that achieving excellence takes patience and discipline.

The Year 2 (7-year-old) students started the concert with the charming melodies of Violin Song. They also demonstrated familiarity with Chinese culture through music by playing the Sichuan folk song, Tai Yang, while accompanied by the clear voices of the choir. After that, Year 2 student Karen performed Concerto No. 2, 3rd movement, as a solo with great confidence.

The Year 3 (8-year-old) students played four pieces named after the seasons, composed by Gary Sanderson, Head of Music for YCIS in China. The music expressed nature’s beauty and impermanence. Every year, the teachers also perform, and their delivery of The Merchant of Venice led to a warm round of applause from the audience.

Sisi Wang, head violin teacher at the Hongqiao campus, had nothing but praise for the students’ performances: “The concert showed their quick acquisition of violin skills in a short period of time,” she said, referring to the school’s introduction of the programwhen students are 4 years old. “It also showed the teachers’ continuous instruction and the tremendous support our parents have given to our violin program.”
