global-child-day-sYew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS Shanghai) Pudong Campus celebrated its own Expo of sorts - Global Child Day (“GCD”), the annual parent-sponsored event - for the 5th time on May14.

This year’s theme “It’s An Arts Expo!” attracted a crowd of over 1,000 students, parents, teachers and administrators who enthusiastically celebrated the rich cultural diversity of the YCIS Pudong community by visiting country “pavilions” or booths, dedicated to teaching the community about their distinctive arts.

In all, 24 countries, including the Benelux and Nordic countries, China, Australia, Korea, The Netherlands, Nigeria, the United States of America and Venezuela, participated by bringing their country’s various native arts to life for both the education and delight of those attending.

Other activities included music, dance, art, food and theatre from around the world. YCIS Primary students sang in a multitude of languages, Indonesian dancers mesmerized with ancient dances and the Indian community dazzled the crowd with colorful saris and intricate henna tattoos. There were painting lessons in the French salon and pizza from the Italians. The Japanese parents even created a whole origami world made of paper! There was flag waving and a myriad of activities that inspired both pride and awe. Children and adults alike were also able to sample home-made foods from over 30 different countries.
