On Friday May 21, students from Years 1, 2 and 3 at Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS) performed in the annual Violin Concert.

ycis-violin-1sAll students in these year groups take violin classes as a core part of the curriculum. Parents and friends were invited to the concert to see what the students have learned over the past year. The concert was very impressive, with the students performing a range of pieces as a whole group, in small groups and even some solos. The audience was impressed by the confidence and musical skills of the young students. It was interesting to see the development from Year 1 to Year 3. While the Year 1 students had mastered basic skills, the Year 3s had a much bigger repertoire. The Year 3 soloists displayed strong emotion in their playing, which is a very important aspect of professional performance.

By teaching the students an instrument at a young age, YCIS hopes that students will enjoy music throughout their lives. As well as being a valuable skill in its own right, learning music has also been shown to enhance children’s reasoning skills, develop patience, concentration, coordination and self-discipline.
