Once again this year, Secondary students at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS), Pudong Campus had the opportunity to explore China and expand their learning by participating in the ‘Education Outside the Classroom’ (EOTC) program.

In the early morning hours of Monday, November 2, students in Years 7-10 departed for Xi’an, Yangshuo, Lijiang, and Fujian, excited to begin five days of exploring, inquiring and learning beyond the walls of the classroom.

The excursions were the highlights of cross-curricular units of study that included both pre- and post- trip learning activities about these historically, culturally, and geographically significant destinations. Teachers from each year level worked together to develop units focused around central guiding questions that enabled students to approach these destinations not just as tourists, but as critical thinkers connecting what they have learned in the classroom with the world around them. For example, Year 7 students visiting Xi’an pondered how the culture of the past is reflected in the present while Year 8 students evaluated the effects of tourism on the local population in Yangshuo.

During the excursions, students consolidated their learning through writing, discussing and reflecting on the events and activities that made up each day’s itinerary. Upon their return to Shanghai, students had follow-up lessons to further expand and internalize their learning. Students also prepared presentations to share with parents and fellow students at weekly assemblies, allowing the entire secondary community to learn from each other as well as build anticipation for next year’s trips!
