On June 6th, Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS) Early Childhood Education students were treated to a day out at Red Tree restaurant where they were taught how to make pizza and brownies by French chef Benoit Parrot.

Twenty young, budding chefs worked together with their parents to create the tasty treats in an activity full of family fun. The students made pizzas with different toppings including chicken, ham, pineapple, mushrooms and olives, but the biggest smiles arose when they were making the sticky chocolate brownies. One YCIS parent Varya said, “I didn’t use to cook at home but my daughter really enjoyed today so we’re going to cook together more often in the future. When I grew up, I wasn’t encouraged to cook at an early age but cooking should be a very natural experience, not a chore.”

After all their creative cookery, the YCIS students then feasted on their delicious dishes before returning to school. Chef Parrot stated, “I used to be a teacher and I love kids so this kind of class brings me a lot of happiness. I think it’s very important for children to learn how to cook at an early age. These days, so many meals are ready made. I think it’s great for children to always eat more healthily using fresh ingredients and develop a passion for cooking.”

Both parents and children enjoyed their time at the restaurant immensely and are sure to develop a closer bond as a result of this entertaining field trip.
