From November 17 to 20, Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS) Primary School held many strange sights. The corridors were teeming with dragons, pirates and princesses as well as teachers and students running around in their pyjamas. In fact, it was the celebration of all things fictional during Book Week.ycis-bookweek-1s

At YCIS Beijing, developing English Literacy is one of the main goals of the primary department and the varied program of activities during Book Week was designed to encourage a love of reading. Besides a week long book fair, students were able to take part in some truly unique activities, including performances of multicultural myths and legends from professional storyteller Roger Jenkins from Singapore. Furthermore, teachers and parents benefitted from his workshops on how to use stories as a learning aid.

One of the students’ favorite events was ‘Snuggle Up And Read’. Children wore their pyjamas to school and brought in well loved soft toys, enjoying a cup of hot chocolate while they shared bedtime stories with their classmates and Chinese and Western Co-teachers.

Everyone had great fun on the final day of Book Week with both teachers and students dressing up as their favorite fictional character like Cat in the Hat, Pippy Longstocking and a very scary Cruella DeVille.
