Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS) held a series of Careers Talks during March which brought parents from a variety of fields to present to Year 11 and 12 students, giving them a snapshot of the world of careers.careers-talk-s

The forum-style presentations gave students first-hand accounts of the job roles, qualifications and training, and industry experience in Journalism, Law, Engineering and Diplomacy. Louis De Maistre, a Year 11 IGCSE student, said, “Hearing them (presenters) talk about their training made me think about the IB courses that I should take.” Ariena Chi in Year 12, who came to the sessions with some pre-determined career plans, thought the speakers “opened up more options” for her and inspired her “to explore other career paths such as working in an NGO.”

Commenting on the connection between career goals and educational training, one parent who attended the talks felt that students should “apply what you’ve learnt and realise that academia is different to work place smarts…be open to learning, being mentored and be keen to see things from varied perspectives.”

Career and University Guidance Counselor, Edwin Liew, believes that “for our students, career planning involves meeting career professionals who have a wealth of experience.”
