ycis-bj-isscc-2014-champion1On Saturday, 1 March a team of pioneering Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) students gathered in the early morning to travel to neighbouring Hebei Province for the 2nd annual International School Snowsports Competition of China (ISSCC). The ISSCC was organized by Ole Sports of Beijing and was hosted by the Wanlong Ski Resort, which is part of the Winter Olympics bid for 2022 with Beijing and Zhangjiakou. A total of seven international Schools from Beijing participated with just under 40 participants across the Skiing and Snowboarding categories.

This year’s two-day event was fortunate enough to have favourable temperatures dipping just below 0 degrees Celsius and with a midweek delivery from Mother Nature of fresh snow. The first morning session consisted of simple slalom racing techniques and allowed the competitors, who ranged from ages 7-18, time to get familiar with the piste.

YCIS Beijing’s ski racing team consisted of students Maya Warren (Y3), David Yamamoto (Y10), Marcello Finnochario (Y10), Jonathan Chan (Y12), Margaret Ho (Y13), Alan Kim (Y13), and Plato Chen (Y13). YCIS Beijing surpassed the field of competitors by winning the Overall School Championship based on a points system for 1st – 4th place finishes across the Giant Slalom and Dual Slalom races.

Top Performance Results included: David Yamamoto - 1st Place Giant Slalom, 2nd Place Dual Slalom; Jonathan Chan - 3rd Place Giant Slalom, 3rd Place Dual Slalom; Marcello Finocharrio - 2nd Place Giant Slalom and Margaret Ho - 3rd Place Dual Slalom.

The YCIS Beijing students were outstanding school ambassadors once again and continued to showcase their many talents over the weekend as they were cheered and supported by a large contingent of visiting YCIS Beijing teachers.

All those involved are now looking forward to next year on the slopes with the aim of successfully defending the Overall School Championship award.
