On April 8, Year 5 students from Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) were entertained by two Peking Opera singers. The two actors, dressed in full opera costume, gave the group of international students a better understanding of one of the quintessential elements of Chinese culture: Peking Opera.ycis-peking-opera-visit-s

The students study Peking Opera as part of the Primary Chinese curriculum and meeting the colorful characters brought this ancient art form to life. The actors began their visit by performing two arias from well-loved Peking Opera classics. The students enjoyed a presentation on the fundamentals and common characters of Peking Opera. The actors showed the students how to move and act in the traditional style. Another highlight of the visit for the students was the chance to have their faces painted just like famous characters from Peking Opera.

The Primary Chinese curriculum combines language instruction with cultural learning both in and outside the classroom. This gives students a deep understanding of China. Other recent activities in the Primary Chinese curriculum have included a kite-making workshop with a Chinese handicraft expert.
