After six weeks of preparation, eighteen students represented Yew Chung International School of Beijing in the Scholar’s Cup competition from 13 to 14 April. The events involved two 12-hour days of competition including team debates, collaborative writing, the scholar’s challenge and scholars’ bowl in which they were required to compete with students from several other international schools in Beijing. Within the cup competition, the four main events were separated into six subject areas: science, arts, literature, history, current events and special area.
YCIS Beijing’s Year 10 students Charles Yin and Chloe Tan performed outstandingly throughout the event to achieve 1st and 3rd respectively in the Overall Scholar category. Charles Yin obtained first place in history, special area and the Scholar’s Challenge, and he also achieved second in both science and current affairs to cement his place at the top of the overall standings. A great deal of preparation went into the event, as Charles explains. “We had two meetings every week with our different specialist subject teachers at YCIS Beijing to ensure that we were fully equipped to overcome any challenges that we might face during the event. As a result of our preparation, we felt quite confident that we could do well in the competition”.
Chloe Tan, who finished 3rd overall, believes that such a competition encourages students to develop their knowledge of individual subject areas to a greater depth. “I believe a huge benefit of the Scholar’s Cup is that we have the opportunity to discuss ideas and issues outside of the school curricula. Within classes, our teachers always use real life examples, but within our meetings prior to the event we went further and analyzed a large number of real-life topics.”
The Scholar’s Cup victory is yet another reminder of YCIS Beijing’s growing list of academic achievements. Congratulations to the whole YCIS Beijing team for their exceptional efforts within a thoroughly challenging competition.
