ycis-bj-entrepreneurship-photoOn 11 May, Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) IGCSE Enterprise students were given an informative and entertaining presentation from Dominic Johnson-Hill, Founder of Beijing t-shirt business Plastered 8, in which he described his entrepreneurial journey from a small shop on the streets on Nanluoguxiang Beijing to a million-dollar business. The students were truly inspired by Dominic’s story and his sheer enthusiasm for creative thinking and taking risks.

Since the start of Plastered 8 in 2006, Dominic described how he has constantly reinvented his brand to stay fresh in a competitive industry and described some of his sucessful marketing campaigns while encouraging the students to take risks in life and always ask questions. He won the 2008 award for British Entrepreneur of the Year in China and the artwork that he created with Plastered 8 has made its way into art museums in Taiwan and America and can be seen in restaurants and cafes in Beijing, including the popular Moka Bros restaurants. He is also a regular on Chinese TV and radio and hosts his own travel show on Fox TV.

When asked what he hoped students had taken out of his presentation, Dominic said, “I personally find it inspiring when a young person tells me they’re thinking of starting a business rather than the traditional route of working for someone else. My story is quite tangible as my business is still relatively small and it is close to people’s hearts as it is a Beijing business. It’s an awesome thing if the students are interested in becoming entrepreneurs. I hope the presentation has encouraged them to be creative and inspire others and not to be conservative.”

IGCSE Enterprise is a unique course that brings the world of business into the classroom and gives learners a clear insight into what it means to think like an entrepreneur. It is the first Cambridge IGCSE syllabus that asks learners to adopt the thoughts and actions of entrepreneurs, developing their knowledge and understanding of the practicalities of setting up and running their own new enterprise. The course aims to equip learners with a range of vital life skills for use in planning and organization, communication and financial management.
