To build on the personal, social and emotional development aspects of the Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, the K3 Panda class focused on ways of building and maintaining friendships.ycis-panda-friend-s

The children came up with the idea of throwing a party for their friends. They planned all the activities, the decoration and ‘special’ items they would bring to share such as a favorite book, toys, food and even one student’s little sister. The students wanted to invite the other ECE classes as a way of connecting and extending their friendships so the teachers helped them to write and deliver invitations using the children’s own words.

The party was a great success with party hats, iced ‘friendship’ biscuits, fantastic food brought by the children, great music (again chosen by students), ‘special’ items to share and discuss and wonderful singing and dancing with dressing up and face painting.

This project was totally driven by the children and their ideas and desire to develop their friendships with their schoolmates and families. The students and their families are developing the understanding that their play is seen as a valuable learning experience in the YCIS Beijing ECE program.
