bcis-ecc_kg_music_morning-58On 23 September, Kindergarten students at the Early Childhood Center of Beijing City International School (BCIS) participated in a world music activity as part of their “Who We Are” Unit of Inquiry. Each class shared one song from one country to introduce the distinctive music styles found around the world. They learned of the unique melodies from countries such as Germany, France, India, Ukraine, Fiji, Italy, Africa, and China. Several guests, including parents and Senior students, were invited to perform songs on the French horn, accordion, and Chinese Erhu, as well as sing and dance for the children.

The aim of the activity was to increase students’ awareness in the differences and similarities that make each person and culture unique, as well as understand them. The children also gained further answers to questions such as “who am I, what are my feelings, what do I like or dislike, and what am I capable of” through auditory, visual, group, and individual learning. The students not only had a fun time, but most importantly, a wonderful learning experience.
