wiss-musicThe Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) Community Choir sent four of their talented student musicians, Yuri Oe, Megane Leung, Emanuel Sahlstrom and Hanna Sahlstrom along with 8 parents and 3 staff members to the International Schools Choral Music Festival on February 15-19th.

The festival was held in Beijing in the Forbidden City Concert Hall. It boasted representation from over 26 different international schools and gave the students the opportunity to sing and play among 500 other talented musicians from all over the world. The festival featured many guest artists, and students took part in workshops in Piano Pedagogy, Gospel Singing and Composition.

The festival was entitled Lumen and carried the theme of ‘light’. It featured the works of Karl Jenkins, who is currently the world’s most prolific living composer. He was also the guest composer at the event, and WISS students Emanuel, Hanna and Megane were even able to perform drums for his new composition Qingzhu, which was specially commissioned for the festival. The International Schools Choral Music Society aims to “foster a global music experience,” bringing together diverse cultures and backgrounds using approaches based on “collaboration, innovation, creativity and passion.”

For WISS, it was another opportunity to involve their students in a beneficial music program where they can focus on their skills and develop their talents in the presence of world famous artists, leaving them excited and inspired.
