wiss-orientationFive years ago, there was one building on the site of the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) and 157 students. Now with eight major buildings stretching across 16 acres and 640 students busily engaged in every possible productive activity, it is amazing to see how WISS has progressed year-on-year.

Things were buzzing along but the sense of warmth and that ever-present community spirit over the years is always maintained and enhanced.

“We had big plans of course, and it has been an abiding pleasure to work with the School Board to develop the campus and student body. Now we are medium-sized, and we keep adding to what we have to increase the choices of our young people and to cater for the growing numbers of families who want to follow the International Baccalaureate programs from Early Years to Graduation.”

As well as new sports fields, computer labs, and a new shop, WISS is building a new sports and specialist facility, to open early in 2013. This includes a new 25-meter swimming pool, a 300-seat cafeteria, a new gym with basketball and badminton courts, as well as many more classrooms for specialist music and arts programs.

“We hope to materially add to the enthusiasm our students bring to daily life. We should be ready for cutting the ribbon on this new facility by next February and then the conversion of our current gym/theatre into a new, larger Orsini Theatre will begin. Exciting times! We are also hoping to have the front of the school remodeled by this stage so visitors and passersby can better see the beautiful campus that we have been lucky enough to help nurture over the past few years,” said the Director.
