Wellington’s Commitment to Chinese Studies

wellington-mag-cmfrontcoverloresThe Chinese program at Wellington College International Shanghai runs beyond just being a core subject. Led by Helena Hicks, Director of Chinese Studies, the Mandarin teachers aim to deliver a wide-ranging program of enrichment. It provides multiple opportunities to bring both language and culture into the learning experience of every pupil inside the classroom, as well as through a wide range of extra-curricular activities, focusing on Chinese history, art, music and history.

One of the main achievements was the publication of the first Wellington Mandarin magazine. This pupil-led magazine was collaboration between the staff and students who attended both Wellington College based in China and Wellington College in the UK.

This first edition is a beautiful volume, jam-packed with great articles and essays written by Wellingtonians, along with artwork and photographs taken throughout the last academic year. 

This magazine not only represents the commitment our teachers made to improve the standard of Chinese language and culture teaching for the international community, but also showcases an international outlook. Strong linguistic ability and cultural competency are pivotal to the success of future global citizens.

The Mandarin department is also increasing in size this new school year, with four new staff joining to make the teaching team thirteen-strong. This allows teachers to further focus their teaching on student needs and, for the first time, to offer a Chinese Cultural Studies course for selected first-language students.
