wellington_1st-year-at-wellingtonUnder the bright lights of the Shangri-La and with the music of ‘The Monday Solution’ by their very own award-winning rock band, Wellington College International Shanghai celebrated its first birthday with an anniversary ball in Shanghai on 6 June.

The Anniversary Ball sought to recognize the hard work and dedication of the Wellington community in making its first year such an outstanding success. From the dynamic Arts Festival and Chinese New Year celebrations to the events organized by the Friends of Wellington, such as Breakfast with Santa and the Summer Fayre, the Wellington community has so much of which to be proud.

Musical entertainment was provided by ‘Hazel and the Nuts’, DJ Andrew Bull, and the Year 9 Rock Band, who recently won the Battle of the Bands competition. The highlight of the evening was the cutting of a spectacular birthday cake by Founding Master, David Cook, and Chair of Governors Joy Qiao, with celebratory champagne for all. There was wonderful food, great company and a night of dancing.

Cheryl Freeman-Phillips, the Chair of the Friends of Wellington, gave a moving speech about how of a sense of community that Wellington has generated.

“When the school first opened, the Friends of Wellington was immediately founded. The children are at the core of our school and the parents and staff form a very supportive network through which our pupils learn and develop. The ballroom felt like it was packed with one big extended family – an unprecedented success considering our doors only opened in August.”
