Wellington College International Shanghai is delighted to welcome Helena Hicks as their Director of Chinese Studies (Mandarin).

wellington-sh-helena-hicksHicks is currently teaching Mandarin at the highly prestigious Cheltenham Ladies College in England, one of the leading girls’ schools in the country and consistently very high up in the UK academic league tables. The Ladies’ College is not Helena’s first school in England, as she has also been Head of Department at the Gloucestershire Mandarin School and, before that, taught at Pate’s Grammar School and St. Peter’s High School in the same county.

In China, Hicks studied at Hunan Normal University, gaining both a BA and an MA in English Language and Literature. She is fully qualified as a teacher in both China and the UK. Helena is a leading member of Gloucestershire’s Chinese community, often organizing various events and celebrations. She lists as her other interests swimming, walking, table tennis and badminton.

She is very excited about joining Wellington Shanghai: “It is difficult to express my excitement about joining Wellington College Shanghai as Director of Chinese Studies. To become part of the Wellington phenomenon is exciting enough, but to be there as a totally new college opens its doors is an opportunity few teachers ever get. Chinese is an important part of this, and I am confident that every student (and every staff member) will embrace the language and enjoy learning and using it, not just by virtue of its inherent value as a major world language, but also because the language is fascinating, beautiful and fun with a rich historical and cultural background. My vision for Chinese at Wellington Shanghai is one that draws on this richness to present a stimulating, relevant and rewarding learning experience that is truly cross-curricular and extends deeply into the college’s extra-curricular provision.”
