wellington-bar-performanceWellington College International Shanghai Senior School Jazz ensemble, directed by Nick Muzyczka, performed at the popular Heyday Vintage Jazz Lounge on 27 February. Their performance included a variety of popular and lesser-known Jazz standards, such as Sweet Georgia Brown and A Foggy Day. The ensemble was also joined by some Wellingtonian singers for a number of pieces, including One Note Samba and the popular Summertime.

The Jazz ensemble is intended to offer advanced performing opportunities for pupils in the Senior School and to introduce Wellington pupils to this important style of music. Wellington music teacher Nick Muzyczka commented, “Playing improvised music is a real challenge and requires a lot of courage to go on the stage with no plan. This form of music helps to prepare pupils with essential life skills as they build their confidence and stand up and improvise in front of an audience.”

Music is a very important part of the Wellington curriculum, and this kind of performance provides pupils with a platform where they can showcase, practice and strengthen their skills.
