wellington_school-news1_2On 16 May, Wellington College International Shanghai opened its gates to parents, pupils and the wider Shanghai community to celebrate its first annual Summer Fayre.

In glorious sunshine, more than 800 people came to welcome the start of summer and to participate in an afternoon of activities, games and pupil performances.

Situated on Shanghai’s sole school cricket field, each year group and House hosted a number of children’s games and activities. Among the many activities on offer were bouncy castles, a wet play area, student musical performances and a wonderful array of games stalls, including the very popular ‘Sponge the teacher’, ‘Beat the goalkeeper’, ‘Hook-a-Duck’, and ‘Guess the number of sweets’. In addition, the chance to be decorated with hair extensions and temporary tattoos, and not forgetting the Fayre’s special guests: a fire engine, climbing wall and two ponies. The BBQ area, ice cream and sizzling British sausages were especially popular in between visits to the activities.

Parents and teachers battled it out in the Tug of War competition and enjoyed renditions of popular classics given by the College’s choirs, Wellington DJs and the Year 9 Rock Band. The string orchestra performed Saint Saens spooky Danse Macabre, and the Pippin cast rounded off the afternoon by giving a sneak preview of the musical numbers that they will perform from 18-20 June when the school production takes to the stage.

Many children and parents tried their luck with the different tombolas and the raffle, which featured ninety amazing prizes including iPads, bicycles, kick boards and hotel vouchers. The organization of this hugely successful fixture was a joint effort between the parents and staff of the Wellington community, and everyone is already looking forward to next year’s Fayre.
