Wellington College, one of England’s greatest public schools, brought Shakespeare’s Othello to Beijing on April 2, performing a fresh abridged version of the four-hundred-year-old tragedy for the tour.othello-s
This is one of the only times the play has ever been performed in China, with the strong teenage cast taking to the stage at the Middle School affiliated to Renmin University on April 2.  As well as the actors, the troupe of 18 included a number of the school’s most talented musicians.
The play is directed by Dr Anthony Seldon, the school’s Principal who is also one of Britain’s most acclaimed political and historical authors, having written or edited over 25 books including the standard biographical works on former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Later this year his biography of Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be published.
"Each of these talented young actors is a star in the making," said Dr Seldon. "They bring an energy and passion to their performance that is extraordinary in ones so young. I have directed plays for over 30 years since my time at Oxford University and these pupils show ability and originality beyond their years.
"We are looking forward to bringing the genius of Shakespeare to China. His themes are intensely human, timeless and relevant in any culture."
The performance in Beijing is part of an Asian tour by the group, who are also visiting Hong Kong, Singapore City and Ho Chi Minh City.
