two-wellingtonsWellington College International Tianjin was, yet again, witness to a number of stunning performances of classical and contemporary music in the Seldon Theatre, in a concert that featured choirs and performers from not one, but two Wellingtons – Wellington College International Tianjin and Wellington College, UK.

On the evening of 21 October, the two schools performed a joint concert involving a range of instrumental and vocal performers. The concert was opened by the Wellington String Ensemble performing Elgar and Tchaikovsky, and other highlights included Mozart’s Ave Verum and Ravel’s Piece en forme de Habanera. The Tianjin Junior School Choir, directed by Ms. Faye Gossedge was outstanding in their performance of Armstrong Gibbs’ Five Eyes, as was the virtuoso performance from Mimi who performed Zhumang Hua’s China’s Liberation Day on the piano. The Wellington College A Cappella Group then sung a range of popular classics, most notably including Chilcott’s arrangement of Lennon and McCartney’s Yesterday and Lawson’s arrangement of I Dreamed a Dream from ‘Les Miserables’. The Boubil and Schonberg theme was continued in turn by Year 7 pupil Crystal, who sung an unforgettable solo rendition of the musical’s Castle on a Cloud, and later by the combined school choirs performing Bring Him Home.

Co-directed by Steve Griffiths – Director of Performance Arts at the Tianjin school, and his counterpart Mr. Simon Williamson, Director of Music at Wellington College in the UK – this truly memorable concert came to a conclusion with Dillon and Lakeman’s Blue Mountain River. The concert demonstrated a number of the many academic and collaborative links that exist between the two schools, allowing pupils from both schools to proudly and confidently showcase their talents and abilities in the performance arts to a captive audience of parents and friends of the Wellington community.
