TIS Students Participate in MUN

Each year Tianjin International School (TIS)provides opportunities for secondary students to participate in the Model United Nations (MUN). MUN gives the students a platform to practice public speaking and policy debate, sharpen critical thinking and problem solving skills, and learn how to negotiate effectively across cultures with people of different backgrounds.

This year TIS students represented 15 countries during MUN in Korea and Singapore. To present the case well for his or her country, each delegate needs to conduct thorough research on basic information about the country, the challenges facing the country, the interests of and conflicts with other countries on various issues, and produce sound solutions with given resources. Students learn to prioritize their country’s needs, evaluate the give and take in the decision making process, understand other people’s points of view, and work together in a world of finite resources and incompatible goals.

Shannon Kao, TIS senior, said MUN naturally taught her a lot about public speaking. “It requires students to get up in front of strangers to present a position and then to defend the position and answer questions on-the-spot. This type of debate really encourages quick thinking and creative responses. The speech-writing portion also helps develop persuasive writing skills and introduces you to the best way to convince a large group of people.”
