Tianjin International School (TIS) Theater Department’s production of I Never Saw Another Butterfly, written by American playwright and author Celeste Raspanti, featured high school student actors in a true story of hope, love, and survival in a World War II concentration camp.tis-butterfly_s

Fewer than 100 of the fifteen thousand children under the age of fifteen who passed through the Terezin concentration camp survived. The play highlighted the struggles of children uprooted from their homes as well as their courage and optimism.

Heart-felt scenes of pain and longing, interwoven with sincere portrayals of perseverance and hope, showcased the students’ long hours of rehearsals and hard work coming to fruition in a consistent and high-quality performance.

An art gallery gave audiences an additional glimpse into the concentration camp with samples of actual artwork done by the children at the camp and photographs of the camp itself. A series of poems written by children at the Terezin concentration camp were also included.

One display board shared the story of Inge Auerbacher, a child survivor of the Terezin concentration camp, who wrote to TIS’s cast and crew. Ms. Inge Auerbacher had spent 3 years at Terezin between 7-10 years of age, and had also met Raja, one of the characters in the play, a few years ago at a memorial at Terezin.

Kudos to the cast and crew’s excellence and dedication, and to the production’s development of budding, young talent in the making!
