thisfilmfest3On 26 April, Tsinghua International School (THIS) hosted its first 8-Hour Film Making Challenge Film Festival. Teachers Nicola Carozza (Film Studies and English Language Support) and Daniel Cruz (Multimedia) organized this event to celebrate the art of film and its importance within educational institutions.

Students and teachers from Harrow International School Beijing and Western Academy of Beijing joined with students from THIS to brainstorm, film, edit, and view films within 8 hours. The topic for their films was “Skeptical Scrutiny of Hypotheses vs. Great Openness to New Ideas,” a quote posed by Carl Sagan. Nicola and Daniel wanted to promote the core values of their school: collaboration, discovery, engagement, cultural diversity and Spartan spirit. Their aim was to gather students from different schools of diverse nationalities to work together, discover the different techniques of creating film, engage in acting and editing and share the excitement, passion, and vigor that can be created through the art of film. In addition, actor and teacher Joseph Gregory Allen provided a motivational speech to encourage students. In the end, great friendships were formed, exceptional teamwork was exhibited, and original student films were created.

This is an event that will be continued in future years.
