Registration deadline: May 31st

summerprogram_logoThe Shanghai American School Summer Program is now available to any expat student residing in Shanghai. The main educational programs will focus on literacy and incorporate multimedia presentation skills for ages 4 to 17. For ages 5 to 12, a variety of programs will be available including Chinese language, musical theater and science-based programs.

This summer SAS is also excited to offer several new programs, including Camp Millionaire, for example. Camp Millionaire teaches students how to be the CEO of their own life; it is a four-day program that helps students to understand the importance of managing everything in their life, starting with money.

The Movie Making and Media Arts Course for ages 11 and up is another exciting program. These courses have proven to be some of the more popular electives over the past three years. The final projects that students complete will demonstrate what they have learned on the Mac computer software. The more advanced students can prove their skills on iLife and practice digital integration. This includes using video cameras, sound recording equipment and digital media sharing to produce a presentation on iMovie with music that has been created or customized on Garage Band. Media arts will be part of all courses this summer to incorporate the theme of Moving Forward with Technology.

Lunch is now included in the tuition cost of each student. Students have four options: sandwiches, a Western or Asian-style meal, or they may bring their own lunch.

A bus service is offered at an additional cost of 520 RMB per week.

Program descriptions and registration links are online at www.saschina.org/summerprogram.

Concordia HSSummer SAT/PSAT Preparation

Dates: June 11th – 15th; June 18th – 22nd

Time: 9 am to 4 pm, Monday thru Friday

Fees: 8,000 RMB (tuition includes instruction in three classes as well as a textbook and all review materials, classroom instruction materials, as well as 5 full-length tests with scores/answer keys)

Each day, students will rotate through three separate classes designed to cover the material tested on all three portions of the new SAT and PSAT Tests.

Writing and Grammar Review Section. This section of the course is designed to help students tackle the writing section of the SAT Reasoning Test. The testing format consists of multiple-choice writing and grammar questions as well as a timed essay. Students will write, score, and analyze practice essays and tests as well as review the grammar/composition skills required to help students develop the writing and editing skills measured on the SAT as indicators of college success. Timed practice tests and essays will be administered and scored in order to help students gain the confidence and experience needed to perform their best on test day.

Critical Reading Review Section. This section of the course is designed to help students tackle the critical reading portion of the SAT Reasoning Test, which contains short and long critical reading passages, along with vocabulary based sentence completion questions. Students are asked to analyze passages from natural sciences, literary fiction, social studies, and the humanities. The critical reading section will assess a student’s ability to draw inferences from text, to synthesize information, and to distinguish between main and supporting ideas. Questions will also measure the ability to understand word meaning in context, follow the logic of an argument, and recognize genres. Materials and review exercises covered in class will help students develop the skills measured on the reading portion of this test. Timed practice tests will be administered and scored in order to help students gain the confidence and experience needed to perform their best on test day.

SAT Math Review Section. This section of the course is designed to help students tackle the math portion of the SAT Reasoning Test, which is comprised of multiple-choice questions and student-produced responses (grid-ins). The multiple-choice section of the math SAT is designed to test student ability to solve problems involving arithmetic, algebra, and geometry – and this program will include skills review in all three areas. The student-produced response section of the math SAT includes problems that reflect situations arising in the real world as well as an emphasis on problems involving data interpretation. Familiarity with the test format combined with solid math strategies will help students answer these math questions both quickly and accurately. Timed practice tests will be administered and scored in order to help students gain the confidence and experience needed to perform their best on test day.

All high school students may register to take the course – with preference given to Concordia students who are enrolled for the fall 2012 school year.

Current grade 8 students (who are entering high school in fall 2012) may also register to take the course on a first registered – first served basis. A limited number of current grade 6 and 7 students may register to take the course on a first registered basis, as a small class suited to their needs and abilities is also being developed.

Class size will remain intentionally small to benefit students enrolled in the courses. A limited number of students will be accepted into the program (55), on a first payment basis. Once enrollment has reached its maximum quota, students will be placed on a waiting list. Please register early to ensure student placement! Bus services will not be provided.  Students may bring lunch or order lunch for delivery.

If you have any questions regarding the content of the program, please contact Gloria Chandler at gloria.chandler@concordiashanghai.org
