Art Summer School 2017 at International Leadership Academy

ila-art-summer-schoolDates: July 24 – August 11 (Monday to Friday)

Time: 9am – 4pm

Age: Grade 9 to Grade 12

The Art Summer School at International Leadership Academy is a high-level, intensive program and is suitable for those who have a passion for art and who also may wish to study art and art related subjects at foreign universities in the future. The program is led by British artists and educators, Jacqueline Rutter and Karen LeRoy Harris.

Jacque is both a practicing artist and an art teacher with many years of experience. Her reputation as one of the best art teachers in the UK for A-level achievement is well deserved, with 80% of her students achieving A and A* grades and winning places on art programs at some of the best UK art schools. She plays a leading role in art development activities, curating exhibitions and artist residency programs as well as having strong relationships with leading UK art university schools. She has a passion for art and has worked with Bayi School in Beijing on their art exchange programs to the UK. Previous to her work as a teacher, she worked for the Sunday Times as a Documentary Illustrator.

Karen is an accomplished artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries around the world. She has developed commissions for the National Trust, Arts Council and Gallery Magazine in the UK, and has worked in arts education for a number of years.

The program focuses around the use of 3D texture and form as installations to be used for the use of drawing and painting skills development. Each student will develop original larger scale paintings, drawings, sketchbooks and an electronic portfolio. There will be theory learning integrated into the delivery of the program to inspire creativity and support learning.  In addition, prior to starting the Summer School students will be given a vocabulary pack which has translations of specific Western art terminology so that students are able to familiarize themselves with the vocabulary of art used on the program. The Summer School will culminate in an exhibition of student work and will be attended by academic staff from local and international universities, including the Arts University at Bournemouth, UK.

There are two pathways on the Summer School – Painting and Costume. Students will choose a pathway in week two and will focus their individual project work around the focus of that pathway and will produce their own original work, which can be used as part of an A-level Fine Art or Textiles submission or as part of a university interview.

The program also includes work on Vanitas. Please see Karen Le Roy Harris’ website for more information on this movement and approach: www.karenleroyharris.com/galleries

The school supplies all materials for students to undertake program activities.

At the end of the Art Summer School there will be an exhibition of work with some very special guests from the Art education world. Prizes will be presented at an evening event on 11 August. The exhibition will be open on 12 August for all family and friends to attend.
