suis-gubei-munShanghai United International School Gubei Campus hosted its Model United Nations Conference on Saturday 13 December, with around 100 students currently enrolled in Grade 8 or above from the Xiehe Campuses of Gubei, Hongqiao, Wanyuan, Pudong, and Wuxi attending the event.

MUN is a program where students (delegates) get to conduct a simulation of the United Nations to discuss the most pressing and significant issues of the international community and to become internationally minded individuals. In MUN, delegates research, debate, negotiate, and work together to draft resolutions to solve many of society’s most complex issues, while building skills in public speaking, writing, teamwork and critical thinking. SMUNC is a great chance for new delegates to gain valuable experience and for previous ones to demonstrate their skills.

The theme of this year’s conference was ‘A World in Crisis’. Students had three committees, dealing with both contemporary and historical geopolitical crises. The General Assembly addressed the crisis in Ukraine, and the World Health Organization debated access to essential medicines, while the Historical Security Council discussed how to handle the end of World War II. The level of care, community, and critical thinking was very impressive. Everyone was very engaged, well spoken, and seemed to be very eager to participate. The British Consulate General in Shanghai, Brian Davidson, gave the keynote address.
