ssis-jpan-fundraising-sWhen Shanghai Singapore International School (SSIS) Senior School students heard the news of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit the northeastern coast of Japan, they initiated the idea of raising funds for the Japanese. After rounds of discussion, the Senior School students decided to raise funds mainly through selling food during lunchtime. The Junior School students were roped into this event that lasted over five school days.

During the fundraising period, booths were set up outside the school cafeteria. The Junior School students, the Senior School students and SSIS parent-volunteers took turns to sell delicious home-cooked food and to operate game stalls. The support from the SSIS community was overwhelming, raising approximately RMB 5,600 on the first day!

In addition, a mobile DJ booth offering song dedication services at a nominal donation was manned by the Senior School students during the lunch hours. Donation boxes were also set up at both campuses for those who prefer to donate cash. The fundraising event ended successfully with a cash collection of RMB 117,584.50.

In Japan, the crane represents longevity and the origami crane is a symbol of peace. SSIS students folded a thousand origami cranes during the fundraising period and their greatest wish is that the Japanese citizens will regain their normal lifestyles and routines as quickly as possible.

SSIS believes in inculcating the IB learner profile in the students. Through this event, students are encouraged to show care and compassion towards others. They exercise initiative through applying thinking skills creatively and demonstrated the ability to communicate their ideas to their fellow schoolmates to come forth to support the fundraising.

The fundraising event was initiated, planned, executed and managed by the students with the full support from the SSIS School Administrators. The SSIS community donated generously in both monetary and non-monetary ways as they stood by those who needed help in times of trouble.

SSIS will be organizing the International Friendship Day to raise more funds for Japan. This event is based on the recognition of diverse background of SSIS students and staff and it will involve all students, teachers, parents and the school administrators.

I’m doing photo research for a college level textbook on Child Development 9e, by Laura Berk, to be published by Pearson Education in 2012. We’d love to include the photo of the students which accompanied the article,
SSIS Students Fundraising for Japan. Would this image be available in a hi resolution format and could you grant permission for its use? I can send complete information about the rights we’d need.

    Many thanks,
