ssis-sz-japan-disaster-3sOn Friday, March 18th at 1:46 pm, one week after the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, Suzhou Singapore International School (SSIS) students and staff bowed their heads in a moment of silence to remember and support those who fell victim to this horrific tragedy.

Students stepped forward to initiate the event and start for the survivors. The money earned will be sent to the Red Cross in Japan to help those that are in need of assistance.

Elementary students dressed in red and white in support of their Japanese neighbors, and all the staff and students, gathered in the foyer of the school as the words were read out in five different languages,

“While we all come from many countries, we are all from one world. When tragedy strikes one nation, it affects us all. We gather here today to express our compassion and pay our respects to those that have lost their lives and to those that now have to endure the unimaginable. In recent memory natural disasters have claimed lives and brought destruction to Chile, Haiti, New Zealand, China and now Japan. As citizens of the world, it is our responsibility to do what we can to help those that are in such need. Please keep those that have lost so much in your minds and hearts”.

To date RMB 37,458 has been collected for the Red Cross. Fundraising continues and a tree of hope will be displayed in the school foyer as a further reminder that the victims have not been forgotten.
