ssis-h2-fundraisingEvery year, Shanghai Singapore International School (SSIS) celebrates the cultural diversity of the school community on International Friendship Day (IFD). This year, SSIS welcomed the world’s favorite animal to be part of the celebration: tigers.

The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) reports that these revered animals are endangered as a result of illegal trade and deforestation. With a current population of fewer than 3,200 in the wild today, WWF strives to double the tiger population by the year 2022, the next Year of the Tiger. Grade 12 students collaborated to set up a booth on IFD to raise funds to contribute to the "Save Tigers Now" project as mooted by the WWF and to educate the school community on the importance of saving tigers.

Through this one-day event, over RMB 6,000 was raised through selling tiger soft toys, necklaces, wristbands and craftworks. The funds raised will be donated to protect these majestic creatures. The charity event is a success and we learn that healthy tiger populations = healthy ecosystems – which is why we humans should befriend them and respect them, just like the way we respect our friends.
