wellingotn-tianjin-shakespeareIn celebration of 400 years of Shakespeare, both Junior and Senior School pupils from Wellington College International Tianjin commemorated the Bard – both in Tianjin and during a trip to Wellington College UK.

During a Junior School Trip to the UK, which took pupils to some of the UK’s most exciting educational landmarks – including the BBC, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and Windsor Castle – pupils visited friends at Eagle House School and the Wellington Primary Academy. The theme for the day was Shakespeare, with pupils taking part in art and drama activities based on the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

On the same day a few hours earlier, the Senior School in Tianjin took part in an assembly run by the pupils of Stanley House that celebrated the life of England’s greatest playwright and poet. Weaved into a presentation of the Bard’s life were a variety of pupil-inspired interpretations that explored various themes and used a range of performance arts. This weekly event included a cross-gender skit on the plot of Romeo and Juliet by Year 7, a performance of Sonnet XVIII in hip hop style by Year 9, soliloquies from Hamlet and Macbeth performed by Years 8 and 10, a soprano duet of Taylor Swift’s Love Story (Romeo and Juliet) with guitar and drums accompaniment, among other unique and entertaining performances.

Judging by the laughter and ovations for all the Junior and Senior School activities, the spirit of Shakespeare appears to have touched a new generation in Tianjin and across the Wellington family of schools.
