The Hongqiao Campus of Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) recently hosted its second annual "Back to School BBQ."  Coinciding with the luncheon, the campus hosted the Dragon Cup Volleyball tournament. The Dragon Cup is a series of athletic competitions held throughout the school year within the SCIS-HIS system of schools. This includes both Pudong and Hongqiao campuses of SCIS as well as its sister school, Hangzhou International School. These competitions give the schools’ varsity and junior varsity volleyball, basketball and soccer teams a chance to compete within the network of the school’s campuses.

The annual back to school event featured live music as well as great food. Most notable, however, was the community spirit that was present. "Turns out we had a two for one event," quipped Hongqiao Head of School Rockey du Randt. As weather mid-morning on Saturday turned quite inhospitable, the school community BBQ was rescheduled for Sunday afternoon. However, as the Dragon Volleyball Cup was already in full swing, over 600 hungry fans and athletes enjoyed the BBQ on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, the rescheduled event was attended by 1200 that enjoyed more BBQ and some live music. "It was all positive and a very, very successful start to our school year," finished Dr. du Randt.

The Dragon Cup competition is always a friendly, albeit competitive, meeting of the school’s teams. The Dragon Cup "Spirit Award" was presented to the Hongqiao teams for a show of exemplary sportsmanship, attitude and skill. The Hangzhou and Pudong teams have two more chances to win the cup during the school year as the Dragon Basketball Cup will take place in the winter and the Dragon Soccer Cup will convene in the spring.
