fullsizerender31Twenty-seven Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) students were involved in the two-day Shanghai Student Film Festival (S2F2) during the weekend of 19-29 March. On Friday, SCIS students travelled to the Museum of Contemporary Art in People’s Square, which served as the base for the 8-hour film challenge. SCIS students were divided into groups of two or three and paired with students from other international schools. Once in groups of five or six, students were introduced to the theme of the 8-hour challenge: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.” Working with students from other schools provided tremendous learning opportunities, as students were constantly sharing skills and learning from one and other. The day ended on a very positive note, as the judges awarded two SCIS groups second and third place respectively.

Saturday saw the students trek out to Shanghai American School, Pudong Campus for a day of workshops, screening of films, and the final S2F2 awards ceremony. The Vancouver Film School ran workshops on cinematography, sound design, make-up, and 3D animation. Students had the opportunity to roam between the workshops and screening venues, which were separated by genre and showing the Official Selections of the festival. Overall, around 200 films were entered into the festival from schools across China and the region (Korea and Japan). SCIS took home five Official Selection awards and 3rd place in the IB Final Film category, arguably the most competitive category. The 3rd place filmmakers, seniors Yuito Niwa and Kento Tsujino, began pre-production work on their film in October, shot their film with ex-SCIS student Ryo Yamazaki in Tokyo in December, and wrapped up the post-production in January and February. It was a fantastic achievement for them and the SCIS film program as a whole, and a great weekend full of fun, learning, and recognition.
