From November 30 till December 4, students from the entire Hongqiao Fine Arts Department of Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) showcased their talents and projects in the Upper School Arts Week.

Each evening, SCIS opened its Auditorium doors to the school community and offered entertainment ranging from middle school music programs to IB Theatre shows and an IB Art Exhibition. IB Visual Arts students opened the week on the SCIS Hongqiao campus by presenting their creative work at a special opening show; their artwork then remained on show throughout the week for everyone to view. The IB Theatre Art students then performed ‘Experimental Theatre One-Person Shows’.

The Upper School Strings lifted winter woes on Tuesday night with some festive holiday music featuring Handel and Beethoven. This was followed by the 7th Grade Drama students’ two fabulously funny fairy tales, “The Emperor’s New Hair” and “The Three Little Elephants.”

On Wednesday evening, parents and friends enjoyed the Choir’s upbeat, fun and familiar tunes like Here Comes the Sun, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, and California Dreamin’. This was followed again by excellent drama performances, this time by the Grade 8 students who performed the one-act, 15 min murder mystery comedy ‘Alone at Last’.

The fabulous SCIS band took the stage on Thursday evening and dazzled the audience with new pieces. The evening also included 6th Grade Drama classes who presented two more fabulously funny fairy tales, “Little Late Riding Hood” and “Slurping Beauty.

Friday night was the grand finale and lived up to its billing with the High School Dance class performing an integration of hip hop/interpretative and pop/contemporary – a mixture of modern music with classic interpretation. The two groups showcased variations of movements and formations as well as classic and modern steps. The 9th/10th Grade Drama also presented two short plays: “Gobbledygook,” and “Taylor, Taylor.
