scis-pd_invention-conv-1On April 20th, Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) hosted the 9th Annual Invention Convention at the SCIS Hongqiao campus.

The Invention Convention requires the use of mathematics, research, writing, science and critical thinking to resolve a problem in a constructive and engaging format. With constant encouragement from teachers, family and friends, the inventors move through four phases over a ten-week period. They are engaged in learning to seek as much information as possible about an idea, to persistently use trial and error to solve problems, and above all, remain confident and enthusiastic about finding a solution!

During the event, all 5th graders from SCIS Pudong and Hongqiao and also Hangzhou International School gathered and presented their projects to adult “judges.” Parent volunteers listened to each student’s presentation, asked questions to clarify and understand and then rated the project based on a number of characteristics including presentation, creativity and originality. There are awards for “Perseverance” whereby a teacher recognizes the extra effort of a student in their goal to invent, “Student Choice Awards” where the kids select the invention they appreciate most, and judge awarded trophies of “Most Original”, “Most Patentable” and “Overall Winner.”
