SCIS Hosts First MS Personal Project

One of the biggest problems that students have as they transition into high school is how to accomplish large tasks and work on their own with deadlines. In order to prepare students for the amount of work that they’ll receive in high school, a Personal Project exhibition for 9th and 10th grade students was arranged at Shanghai Community International School on 4 June.

The Personal Project was a chance for students to pick a topic in which they were interested and engage with that project in a way that was meaningful for them, all while constantly reflecting on the process, their work habits, and how the two intersect for each learner. Students were able to pick any topic that interested them – be it making a film, writing music, or engaging in a science experiment. Once they had done that, it was their job to reflect on their experience and create a short presentation based upon that reflection.

As this was the first attempt at something of this magnitude, there was a lot to learn for both the teachers and the students. Overall, it was a great success. There were over three hundred people in the cafeteria as both presenters and assessors, and each of them was actively engaged in a project that was both challenging and educational. SCIS believes the Personal Project will continue to be a part of a meaningful educational experience in the coming years.
