scis-doors-to-diplomacyMembers of the class of 2015 at Shanghai Community International School entered this year’s Doors to Diplomacy contest sponsored by the US State Department.

An SCIS team, consisting of 9th graders Hamish Bowery-Ireland, Emsley Allgaier, Lily Briggs-Landy, and Julius Schiele, was awarded a Silver Medal. Their website deals with capital punishment and contains original thought, a survey, a video, researched material and pictures.

A total of 134 teams entered from around the world. SCIS entered twenty-three teams, being the second largest number in the world. Topics ranged from the international monetary fund and Internet censorship to human trafficking. In teams of three or four, coached by Amy Brill, students created websites designed to educate the world’s teenagers about global issues. As part of the contest, teams also had to peer edit four websites from around the world and write a project narrative reflecting on their experiences. For many of the students, this was their first time working on such a long-term project that lasted eight months in total, and/or their first time creating websites.

Congratulations to this winning team as well as all the teams who worked so hard on their websites.
