SCIS Hongqiao First Walkathon a Great Success

Shanghai Community International School’s Hongqiao campus held its first Walkathon on March 20th with great success. Despite the rain, clouds and chill in the air, about 100 good spirited SCIS students, parents,
teachers and friends, starting from age 2 in a stroller, walked 8 kilometers through several Hongqiao parks and garden areas in just under 2 hours. Everyone enjoyed the walk and many requested a longer route for next year.

The Walkathon was not merely for fun, but also to raise money to buy 335 trees for the Roots & Shoots Million Tree Project. It also went towards the SCIS Band Boosters.

Like any event, the Walkathon was a success solely because of the terrific support of the diverse SCIS community Brownies, Girl Scouts, IB students and grades 3-10 volunteers, as well as our parents, support staff, teachers and administration.

Anna Maya (located on Taojiang Road) provided delicious Japanese-style vegetarian food and the SCIS Parents and Friends Association (PAFA) provided hot dogs, beverages and school spirit! Tandus Asia donated t-shirts and Coca Cola China Industries Limited donated stylish backpacks made of 100% recyclable material. These items will also be sold on the SCIS Hongqiao campus to help raise further funds for Roots and Shoots and the Band Boosters.

The SCIS community’s culture for giving was apparent in the generous donations made by individual students. Vivian Zondag in the Lower School raised 720RMB, Heinz Schensema in the Middle School raised 2,250RMB, and David Kaptzan in the High School raised over 6,000rmb. This made them each the highest sponsored students in their levels, and winners of the Walkathon Pizza Contest, sponsored by the SCIS administration.

Compliments went out to winners and everyone involved for making such a positive contribution to the SCIS community and for having such great SCIS Dragon Spirit.
