scis-market-day-victoria-astom1“Get your ice cold Freezing Frenzy Smoothie! Only ¥10,” Max Baum’s voice calls out as he shivers to entice customers to purchase his freshly blended banana, chocolate, and Oreo smoothies. “Nothing is impossible to balance at my Dragonfly Pond,” Juliana Zhang’s voice rings out to describe her hand-painted wooden dragonflies, each with a unique authenticity certificate.

One of the most anticipated events of the year, Market Day, took place at Shanghai Community International School – Hongqiao campus on May 30th. From 8:00 am to noon, potential consumers filed into the Hongqiao campus lower school gym, which was filled with over 100 booths selling candy, jewelry, bookmarks, origami, baked goods, refreshing drinks, salty snacks, soap, nail polish, and so much more. There was even a cotton candy machine!

In preparation for Market Day, students learned the basics of economy, calculated costs and potential profit margins, designed marketing campaigns, and presented sales pitches. They also had to keep track of their sales and make correct change. At the end of the day, students carefully counted their cash and calculated profits (or losses). Market Day is an experience the fourth graders will never forget.
