SCIS__Roots and Shoots pic Mr. Smith, Ms. Laycock, Ms. Carole and Mr. Flesher from Shanghai Community International Schools (SCIS) had their pre-kindergarten classes make art projects for a charity art auction last spring. They successfully auctioned off the class artwork and other pieces donated by local artists, photographers and parents. They raised over US$4,000, and all of the money went to help fund the Roots and Shoots Shanghai Tree Planting Project and the Tangsi migrant school in Shanghai-Pudong. The award was presented at the annual Roots and Shoots Festival March 1, 2008.

In light of the desperate environmental situation, the Jane Goodall Institute-Shanghai launched the Shanghai Roots & Shoots Tree Planting Program in April 2007. Shanghai Roots & Shoots is planting trees in the Keerqin desert in the Tong Liao Municipality, Inner Mongolia. The program aims to raise awareness of China’s environmental problems by encouraging people to take responsibility for their energy, waste and lifestyle choices and make environmentally wise decisions.

The trees are planted during the month of April each year by Roots & Shoots students, volunteers, and sponsors with the help of local Inner Mongolian people. The local kids help with the on-going tree measurements and care. So far, Roots & Shoots has planted 30,000 trees in 2007 and has already reached the goal of raising money for 50,000 trees that will be planted in April, 2008. 680 of these trees were bought by SCIS, from money raised during the Art Auction in 2007.

“Our goal is to plant one million trees. This is a big goal, but we believe that with the support of schools/communities like SCIS, it is a reachable one. By planting trees in Inner Mongolia, we will not only be helping to improve the local environment but will also be taking steps to win the fight against desertification and global warming,” commented a Roots & Shoots-Shanghai organizer.
