Grade 6 student, Wendy Hua of Shanghai Concord Bilingual School (SCBS) won 1st Prize in the Senior Primary Group in the 16th China Daily “21st Century New Oriental Cup” National High School English Speaking Competition” (Shanghai Division), which was was held in the Xie Xide lecture hall of Fudan University.

In the first round of the competition, Wendy had to make an impromptu speech, but the second round was a prepared keynote speech on: ‘Somewhere that I want to go’.

In the impromptu speech challenge Wendy gave her answers to the question ‘Would you rather the car can fly or go under the water’? She shared her thoughtful ideas about environmental protection, explaining how cars could help clear up rubbish on the seabed and contribute to a better underwater eco-system.

The standard of English public speaking at this annual competition is outstanding and the competition is particularly fierce, with more than 210 students participating in the finals. In its 20-year history this competition has witnessed the growth and maturity of English Speaking in China.

SCBS is very proud of Wendy Hua winning first prize in this competition and confident that her success will inspire more Shanghai Concord students to participate in the future.
