rego-hike-s1As part of the Outdoor Education Club 13 Shanghai Rego International School (Rego) students, aged 10 to 13, went on a hiking and camping trip to Tianmushan in Zhejiang province from May 13th to 15th.

The trip involved climbing the mighty West Tianmu Mountain (1506 meters above sea level) from the base of the mountain to the summit, a vertical ascent of nearly 1200 meters. The climb proved to be a great physical challenge for all the students and copious amounts of sweat and some tears ensured. However, by 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, all 13 of the children were admiring the view from the top of the mountain, an experience which none of them will ever forget.

The children carried all their needed equipment and supplies with them, set up their tents for the night and had an amazing experience. This particular trip was quite an ambitious one and many staff gave up their own personal time to make it a success. Some teachers went to Tianmushan during the Easter holiday and assisted in finding the campsite and planning the hike route. The teachers used every motivational strategy at their disposal to get the last few kids to the top of the mountain and, as always, provided many fun-filled games around the campfire.

They came back to Shanghai and had to face the next big challenge – a whole day in school without falling asleep. But all the children are already wondering when the next trip will be!
