rbis-healing-homeRainbow Bridge International School’s second grade students have combined their efforts to help support Shanghai Healing Home, a charity organization that provides pre-and-post-surgical care to abandoned babies suffering from surgically correctable deformities. A major focus is the correction of cleft lips and palettes.

RBIS second graders were close witnesses to the difficulties of being born with a cleft palette when a young toddler from Shanghai Healing Home came to visit their classrooms. Part of the charity’s mission is to provide a family-focused, home-like environment that meets not only the babies’ physical needs but also their emotional and social needs. Shanghai Healing Home is in constant need of donations, both monetary and in the form of baby supplies.

Right now, through a result of a community-wide campaign by RBIS second graders to bring awareness to this very deserving charity, their classrooms are overflowing with baby supplies and they have raised 6,311 RMB. They want to take it one step further and raise 8,000 RMB so that RBIS can sponsor a surgery to fix a broken smile! Surgeries to correct a cleft lip or palette range between 7,000 and 20,000 RMB. The Shanghai Healing Home representatives visited RBIS on March 2nd to accept the donations and supplies during a school assembly.

As an IB Primary Years Program candidate school, small student actions connected to learning that are demonstrated outside of the classroom are just as highly valued as those that take place inside the classroom.
