The Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) welcomed Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands on Wednesday, August 31. The Princess was in Beijing to attend the Beijing International Book Fair as representative of this year’s Country of Honor, the Netherlands.  Princess Laurentien van Oranje is the author of two children’s books. Her first book, Mr. Finney and the World Turned Upside Down, which is available in Dutch, English, Spanish and Catalan, has just been published in Chinese.

WAB boasts an integrated Dutch program for elementary school students. Offered in partnership with the Dutch Steering Committee; the program is funded by the local Dutch community and the Dutch government.  WAB was the first international school in China to host a Dutch Learning Program.

The combination of the school’s commitment to the Dutch community and the Princess’ focus on education and literacy set the stage for a great collaboration.

During her visit to WAB, the Princess met with more than 50 students from the Dutch Learning Program, reading from her book in Dutch and speaking with them about another of her passions, and a theme from her stories, the environment. She also shared the same reading and discussion in English for a large and rapt audience of students from WAB’s Grades 2-4.

Princess Laurentien revealed that she has a third book in the Mr. Finney series “in her head” and that she hopes to return to Beijing again next year to continue her promotion of literacy and the environment to children.

Signed copies of the book in hardcover are for sale at WAB for 200 RMB, in Dutch and English. Proceeds will go towards Princess Laurentien’s foundations. Please contact Ellie Holte, Communications Director, via email: ellie_holte@wab.edu
